For a clean neighborhood:
Dispose of waste correctly and even save money

Dear tenants,

Waste disposal is always a major challenge in our residential complexes. The results of the tenant survey have shown that many tenants are dissatisfied with the current situation.

The most important result: everyone is basically interested in cleanliness right on their doorstep.

In this newsletter, we explain the current waste problem – and describe how we can solve it together.

1. The waste problem:
What is going wrong?

Improper disposal: Garbage bags often end up in front of the residual waste garbage can (instead of inside it). This attracts rats and other pests, which endangers hygiene and safety in the residential complex. Another problem is that the residual waste mistakenly ends up in the yellow or blue garbage can.

Overfilled yellow containers: The yellow garbage cans for packaging waste are often overfilled. On the one hand, this is due to incorrectly filled bins. On the one hand, incorrectly filled waste is to blame. On the other hand, it is due to the reclassification of the yellow bin as a recyclable stoff garbage can, as non-packaging made of metal or plastic can now also be disposed of in it. For this reason, we will review and possibly increase the capacity of the yellow bins.

2. Incorrect waste disposal:
What are the reasons for this?

Supposed cost savings:  Those who place their waste in front of the garbage cans instead of throwing it in, want to save costs, as the residual waste fees are charged based on consumption. However, the supposed cost saving is a mistake, as we explain below.

Carelessness: There are always tenants who do not shred cardboard boxes so they do not take up space in the blue garbage can or do not even fit in. Often oversized bin bags or bulky items are disposed of via the residual waste flaps. This waste usually does not end up in the waste bin, but blocks the flaps so that they can no longer be used. In addition, this behavior can lead to malfunctions in the waste bins, which in the worst case can render them inoperable.

3. The cost trap:
Why does incorrectly disposed waste become expensive for everyone?

Cost-pfluous special emptying:

Incorrectly filled paper or yellow garbage cans lead to special emptying by the waste collection service. These special empties cause additional costs: the additional costs are approximately as high as the waste charges for a household for four months.

Expensive pest control:

As residual waste deposited in front of the garbage cans attracts rats, for example, these have to be controlled by exterminators. This causes high costs, which are ultimately passed on to all tenants.

Service costs:

Anyone who simply leaves their waste somewhere for cost reasons,
causes additional costs for the service company, which looks after the site, and thus causes additional costs for all tenants – including for themselves.

Special emptying costs around 80, which is passed on to the tenants.

4. Your waste disposal:
How is it organized?

Consumption-based residual waste charges: 80% of the residual waste is billed according to consumption; Rheinwohnungsbau distributes 20% of the residual waste fees are distributed by Rheinwohnungsbau GmbH to the tenants according to living area. The number of times the waste flap is operated is recorded for individual billing. Each rental party chooses between a 5-liter and a 20-liter filling. As a rule, local authorities calculate 20 liters
of residual waste per person per week. Regardless of the filling quantity, the entire garbage can is billed. The fuller the residual waste garbage can, the lower the price per liter in the consumption-based billing. The aim is to fully utilize the capacity of the bins.

Incidentally, wehave saved money over the last 10 years by billing the majority of our housing stockfor waste based on consumption: in Düsseldorf and Meerbusch, we have reduced waste costs by around 19%, in Duisburg by around 17%.

Sorting waste correctly: Admittedly, sorting waste can sometimes be confusing. After all, there are three different garbage cans for different types of waste. That is why we have enclosed a helpful flyer with this letter that shows you how to sort your waste correctly.

Organic waste to the recycling center: The RWB deliberately does not offer an organic waste garbage can; the reason for this is the risk of misfilling. Because if materials such as plastic or metal are also disposed of in the organic waste garbage can, this leads to costly special emptying. In addition, in most residential areas we do not have the space, directly on the street, for the
storage of many small wheelie garbage cans, which should not be placed in waste cabinets. Households that have a tenant’s garden can dispose of their organic waste at at recycling centers.

•  Waste capacity: If residual waste disposal is not possible due to and a blocked flap, a faulty residual waste system or an overfilled residual waste garbage can , you can also use the garbage cans in the neighboring houses.

5. Better waste management:
What’s new?

Yellow garbage can becomes recycling garbage can: Since January 1, 2025, the yellow bin in Düsseldorf has had a new name and is called the “recyclable waste garbage can” (Werkstofftonne). Now – in addition to packaging waste such as – other waste made of metal or plastic may also be thrown in, for example defective cooking utensils or watering cans. This has been the case in Duisburg for some time.

Weekly emptying of the blue paper garbage can: Since 01.04.2025, the blue garbage can for waste paper in Düsseldorf has been emptied weekly (previously: every 14 days). More frequent emptying means that households have more space to dispose of their waste paper.

Lighting of the garbage can locations: Thanks to the tenant survey, we know that unlit garbage can locations are a problem. We will address this promptly so that the darkness no longer leads to haste or mistakes.
